Tooth-Colored Fillings Can Make Cavities Disappear
Cavities are one of the most common problems we treat here at Marvel Dental, and in the past, the best way to repair them was by placing an amalgam filling. This material, while very strong and durable, always leaves an obvious gray mark on a tooth, plus it can make it more sensitive to hot and cold temperatures. This is why we now only use tooth-colored fillings. Not only do they look better, but they are also a better restorative solution, giving patients the best of both worlds in a single treatment.
What is a Tooth-Colored Filling?
Tooth-colored fillings are actually made of a material called composite resin, which is a mixture of plastic and glass particles. As you might have guessed, it comes in several different shades, so we’re able to perfectly match it to a patient’s enamel color so the filling itself is practically invisible in the mouth.
What’s also special about these fillings is the fact that the material bonds directly to the enamel. Traditional amalgam fillings require a pocket to be made in a tooth in order for it to stay in place, forcing many dentists to remove healthy enamel in the process. With tooth-colored fillings, this is completely unnecessary, enabling our dentists to keep more of a tooth intact while repairing it, ensuring it’s durability for years to come.
What is the Procedure Like?
After numbing a patient’s tooth, your dentist will gently remove any decayed or damaged enamel before coating the tooth with an etching material. This will help the resin form a stronger bond. Once a tooth has been properly etched, the dentist will apply the color-matched resin to the tooth to replace all the structure they just removed. The entire procedure can usually be completed in just one appointment, and most patients feel little to no discomfort at any point.
While cavities are certainly annoying, fixing them is now easier than ever here at Marvel Dental, so if you’re ready to get a solution that looks great and can be trusted to last, contact us today for an appointment.
